Elementary School

Elementary School Science Fair - Over 100 local schools take part every year in Brookhaven National Laboratory's Elementary School Science Fair. Following a school wide contest, Suffolk County schools are invited to send their grade level winners, ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade, to this annual competition. The student projects, which include experiments, demonstrations, diagrams and collections, follow the scientific method. BNL scientists and elementary school teachers work in teams to judge the projects. Each student receives a certificate of participation and a ribbon. The winner -- one for each grade level -- is awarded a medal. Banners are awarded to the schools of the first-place winners.  Here is a short video describing the Science Fair.

Middle School

Middle School Regional Science Bowl - The U.S. Department of Energy’s Regional Middle School Science Bowl® is a two-part, highly publicized competition. It involves a model hydrogen fuel cell car competition and a math and science academic competition. The top three teams in each part of the competition are awarded trophies, and the winning team is invited to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Competition. In 2005, more than 2,000 students participated in twenty-four regional competitions throughout the nation. BNL hosts the LI/NY regional competition. All Long Island Middle School students are invited to participate.

MagLev Contest - The concept of MagLev (Magnetic Levitation) trains was developed and patented by two BNL scientists, James Powell and Gordon Danby. Brookhaven National Laboratory provides students with the opportunity to show off their creativity and innovation by participating in BNL’s annual MagLev competition. Long Island middle schools are invited to enter technology students in the competition. Students can choose from several vehicle design categories, such as self-propelled, electrified, gravity, wind powered, or appearance. The student vehicles, which are designed and constructed at school, are brought to BNL to compete against one another. BNL engineers judge the contest and trophies are awarded to first, second, and third place winners in each category.

High School

High School Bridge Building Contest - High school students from Long Island submit their bridges to the ultimate pressure test, and compete to take part in a national contest! The construction and testing of model bridges promotes the study and application of principles of physics and also helps students develop "hands on" skills. Through participating, students get a flavor of what it is to be an engineer; designing structures to a set of specs and then seeing them perform their function.

High School Essay Contest - The contest aims to challenge students to question and deliberate the purposes and social implications of scientific research. Essays are expected to contain substantive, well-reasoned arguments (rather than simply opinions) that indicate a depth of understanding of scientific and societal issues. All high school students who attend school in Suffolk or Nassau County are eligible

High School Regional Science Bowl - The Department of Energy's National Science Bowl® is a highly publicized academic competition among teams of high school students who answer questions on scientific topics in astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth, computer and general science. BNL hosts the LI/NY regional competition. All Long Island HS students are eligible to participate. Prizes are awards to the top four teams, and the winning team is invited to participate in National Science Bowl.
