CONSUMER PRICE INDEX (CPI) FOR KANSAS CITY
Prices decreased 0.9 percent from the first half of 2008 to the first half of 2009
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for the Kansas City, Mo.-Kan., metropolitan area decreased 0.9 percent over the year, the largest over-the-year decline since 1950, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. According to Regional Commissioner Stanley W. Suchman, nearly three-fifths of the movement in the overall index was attributable to lower transportation costs. The decrease in the transportation index from the first half of 2008 to the first half of 2009 more than offset the increases recorded in six of the seven other major expenditure categories.
Among the eight major expenditure categories, the transportation index had the greatest impact on the overall index. Transportation prices declined 14.3 percent from the first half of 2008 to the first half of 2009, due almost entirely to dropping motor fuel costs. Motor fuel prices fell 39.7 percent over the period, the largest over-the-year decline since publication began in 1978.
The food and beverages index was the second largest contributor to the all items index, accounting for nearly 20 percent of the movement in the index and partially offsetting the decrease in the transportation component. The food and beverages index was up 5.1 percent from the first half of 2008 to the first half of 2009. Prices for food away from home climbed 8.2 percent and accounted for over three-fifths of the increase in the food and beverages component. Costs for food at home were up 3.1 percent. Prices for alcoholic beverages increased 2.7 percent over the period.
Recreation prices, which include admissions to movies, concerts, and sporting events, rose 8.4 percent from the first half of 2008 to the first half of 2009, the largest over-the-year advance since publication began.
The remaining five major expenditure categories-education and communication, other goods and services, medical care, apparel, and housing-had little impact on the overall index, each accounting for less than four percent of the movement. Costs for education and communication rose 2.9 percent from the first half of 2008 to the first half of 2009. Other goods and services, which include prices for tobacco and smoking products and personal care items, rose 3.8 percent and medical care costs advanced 1.4 percent. Housing costs were little changed over the period as an increase in shelter costs was more than offset by a decline in prices for fuels and utilities.
Energy prices, which include prices for motor fuel and household fuels, decreased a record-setting 27.5 percent over the year, with most of the decline occurring in the latter half of the period. The special aggregate index for all items less energy rose 2.5 percent over the year. Excluding the impact of food and energy prices, the Kansas City CPI-U was up 2.0 percent from the first half of 2008 to the first half of 2009.
The Kansas City CPI-U stood at 199.152 for the first half of 2009. This means that a market basket of goods and services that cost $100.00 in 1982-84 cost $199.15 in the first half of 2009. Because metropolitan area CPI data are not adjusted for seasonal price variation, consumers and businesses should be cautious in drawing conclusions about long-term retail price trends from short-term changes in the metropolitan area indexes.
The Kansas City, Mo.-Kan., Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami, and Wyandotte Counties in Kansas; and Cass, Clay, Clinton, Jackson, Lafayette, Platte, and Ray Counties in Missouri.
