This webcast on February 4, 2009, kicked off the Homelessness Resource Center's 2009 FREE webcast series. John Rio of Advocates for Human Potential provided a one-hour webcast about vocational interventions for people who are homeless.
For most of us, work is an important activity. It is also a pathway out of homelessness for many people, as Continuums of Care agencies, career centers, and others are beginning to recognize. Not only does work provide income, it offers a regular structured activity that brings with it a sense of accomplishment, personal rewards, and membership in the community. Despite the economic downturn, increasing unemployment, and the limited assistance available to help people who are homeless get and keep a job, case managers and employment specialists need to help clients pursue employment.

The webcast focused on vocational interventions including setting and supporting vocational goals, determining the strengths and weaknesses of job seekers and identifying the resources they need to be successful.  Strategies for developing occupational skills and job opportunities and matching them with job seeker preferences were presented. Approaches to support job retention were also discussed.

John Rio, MA, CRC co-directed a U.S. Department of Labor technical assistance initiative for the past four years to employ people who are homeless with disabilities. With over 30 years of experience in rehabilitation, housing and recovery services, John has developed materials and provided vocational training and technical assistance. Prior to his work with Advocates for Human Potential, John was a senior staff member of the Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) where he directed national employment initiatives. Recent publications include “Employment and Income Supports for Homeless People” at the 2007 National Symposium on Homelessness Research and “Recognizing Work as a Priority in Preventing and Ending Homelessness” in the Journal of Primary Prevention .
