The Western Governors' Association and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced an agreement on May 28, 2008, to accelerate the development and delivery of renewable energy in the western United States. Over the next three years, DOE plans to contribute up to $2.3 million to a four-phase study of "Western Renewable Energy Zones" to address the growing demand for electricity in the West in an environmentally friendly way.
The West has considerable potential for solar, wind, geothermal, and other renewable energy resources. But the areas of greatest potential use are often in remote areas that are not connected to the grid or to areas with the most demand. Building transmission to connect them with the grid or population centers poses problems with siting and cost-allocation. DOE said the project will identify potential renewable energy zones, develop regional transmission planning to connect those zones, connect buyers and sellers of the electricity generated from renewable sources, and provide a platform to address project siting and costs.
