The central figure on the home page depicts a cross section of a retroviral
virion, surrounded by images representing the research interests of the HIV Drug
Resistance Program (DRP). The center of the virion image links to the home page
of John M. Coffin, Ph.D., while the
oval images around the virion link to the home pages of the Program's senior scientific
staff (counterclockwise from the top): For larger views and
captions of these images, click on the names above.
Along the left side of
the home page are shown three-dimensional structures of the following virion proteins:
(from the top) reverse transcriptase; protease; integrase; the Gag proteins nucleocapsid,
capsid, and matrix; and the gp120 envelope protein. The colors of the structures
correspond to the colors of the same components shown in the virion.
The illustrations
of the virion and all of the individual proteins except nucleocapsid and envelope
were modified from those on the cover of the book
Retroviruses, edited by John M. Coffin, Stephen H. Hughes, and
Harold E. Varmus, 1997, Cold
Spring Harbor Laboratory Press (permission granted from the publisher).
The illustrations of the nucleocapsid and envelope proteins were derived from
information available through Protein Data Bank accession numbers 1A1T and 1GC1,
respectively.
