Visas for Burkina Faso

PLEASE NOTE: Information provided below reflects our latest understanding of visa requirements, but requirements can change without notice.  Always check directly with the local Embassy of Burkina Faso for the latest requirements.

U.S. citizens are required to present a valid passport, visa, and evidence of yellow-fever vaccination for entry into Burkina Faso.  The government of Burkina Faso enacted new regulations on July 1, 2010, which significantly increased the cost of visas obtained at the border and at airports.  A visa valid for one entry with a duration of six months costs 94,000 FCFA on arrival.  U.S. travelers should obtain longer-validity visas from the Embassy of Burkina Faso, 2340 Massachussetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008, telephone (202) 332-5577.  The website of the Embassy of Burkina Faso in Washington, DC, is www.burkina-usa.orgAs forms, fees, photos, and other requirements are subject to change, please verify the current visa requirements with the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Burkina Faso.

The State Department maintains the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) website which will allow you, as an American citizen, to record foreign trip and residence information that the Department of State can use to communicate with you and assist you in case of an emergency.

U.S. citizens around the world who travel or reside abroad can access this site directly at https://travelregistration.state.gov.
We invite you to enroll yourself and your family and get acquainted with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

STEP allows you to enroll and update your contact information on the Internet at any time, making it easier for you to keep your information current.  The site also provides you with up-to-date travel information customized to your unique travel agenda and itinerary.  The data you provide is secured behind Department of State firewalls, accessed only by cleared personnel in Embassies, Consulates, and the Department of State, and releasable only under the provisions of the Privacy Act*.

There are many good reasons to enroll.  As mentioned above, if you are registered, in the event of an emergency, the Embassy would be more able to provide you with assistance.  But, perhaps more simply—and perhaps of the greatest utility for U.S. Citizens in Burkina Faso—for a few-minute investment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) process, you will be tapped into the Department’s periodic email updates on safety, security, and other events in Burkina Faso.

*Note on the Privacy Act - The Privacy Act, which is designed to protect the privacy and rights of all Americans, occasionally complicates our efforts to assist U.S. citizens in Burkina Faso.  As a general rule, we may not reveal information regarding an individual American's location, welfare, intentions or problems to anyone, including family members and Congressional representatives, without the expressed consent of that individual, even when the intent is to assist.  Thus, we urge all Americans to complete the Privacy Act Waiver when enrolling through the https://travelregistration.state.gov
