U.S. EDUCATION SECRETARY KICKS OFF BACK-TO-SCHOOL CAMPAIGN AT SMITHSONIAN EARLY ENRICHMENT CENTER

Emphasizes the need for high-quality early childhood programs in shaping future success of students

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will kick off his Back-to-School campaign at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, with a visit to one of the Smithsonian Early Enrichment Centers (SEEC), located inside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. The Secretary will tour the facility and discuss the importance of high-quality early childhood programs in shaping the future academic success of children. In the coming weeks, as students across the country return to school, Secretary Duncan will visit with them, stressing school safety and challenging them to make every day count, aim for higher standards of achievement and contribute to President Obama's goal of ensuring America has the highest proportion of students graduating from college in the world by 2020.

President Obama's commitment to early childhood includes $5 billion available through the Recovery Act for early childhood programs sponsored by both the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services. Last month, Secretary Duncan and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius highlighted the Administration's blueprint to improve and strengthen early learning programs, and announced their support for efforts in Congress for the proposed Early Learning Challenge Fund. The fund will invest $10 billion to:

  • Improve the quality of early childhood programs across the country
  • Encourage states to set a high standard of quality across all of their early learning programs
  • Ensure that a greater number of children participate in high-quality programs and
  • Deliver the training and support needed to ensure that more children are prepared with the cognitive, social, and emotional skills necessary for kindergarten success.

SEEC is an educational program located within the Smithsonian museum complex, and serves children between the ages of 3 months and 6 years through its child development center, preschool program and kindergarten. Its mission is to provide a high-quality educational program for young children and to advance educational opportunities for them. Centers are located in the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of Natural History.

U.S. EDUCATION SECRETARY TO KICK OFF SUMMER READING INITIATIVE ON THE DEPARTMENT'S PLAZA

Children are Encouraged to "Read to the Top!"

Summer is a great time for reading, whether at the beach or in the backyard; thus U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will kick off the Department's summer reading campaign at noon Wednesday, June 24, on the Department's plaza, 400 Maryland Ave. S.W., Washington, D.C. The Secretary will read to young children as part of the Department's summer reading initiative titled "Read to the Top!" The initiative is in response to President Obama's call for all Americans, including the First Lady and his Cabinet, to serve in their communities. The national campaign, "United We Serve," runs from June 22 through the National Day of Service and Remembrance on Sept. 11.

"If parents can enhance their children's learning and reading abilities at an early age, it provides a strong foundation for later learning and development," Secretary Duncan says.

The U.S. Department of Education's weekly reading campaign will feature various children's books read by the Secretary, other Cabinet members and top Administration officials. The Department, in collaboration with the Corporation for National and Community Service, is partnering with libraries and other community organizations nationwide to combat summer reading loss. Research shows that if a young person reads only five books over the summer, the effect is potentially large enough to prevent a decline in reading achievement scores.
