Local Employment in U.S. Embassy Sofia

Locally Employed (LE) Staff provide unique skills in support of the mission of the U.S. Embassy in Sofia. LE Staff are foreign nationals and other locally resident citizens (including U.S. citizens) who are legally eligible to reside and work in the country.

LE Staff are the continuity of our Mission. They provide the institutional knowledge, local experience and professional contacts that are so important to embassy operations. LE Staff personnel perform vital mission program and support functions. All U.S. Government agencies under the Ambassador’s authority depend to a great extent on the special skills of their local staff, often delegating significant management roles and program functions.

Where We Work

LE Staff work in all sections (e.g., Consular, Public Diplomacy, Human Resources) of the U.S. Department of State as well as other agencies (e.g., Foreign Agriculture Service, Foreign Commercial Service) represented at our Mission.

Who Can Apply

Individuals interested in becoming LE Staff must be legally eligible to reside and work in Bulgaria. This may mean having a work permit, residency permit, or other documentation required under the Bulgarian labor law. Employment at Mission Sofia is based upon merit, qualifications, and equal opportunity.

Application and Selection Process

Mission’s policy is to post LE Staff vacancies on the embassy website. Each announcement provides a short position description, minimum required qualifications, closing date for application submission, other recruitment terms, conditions and procedures.

Applications that fail to explicitly address all requirements specified in the vacancy announcements will not be considered.

The Embassy Human Resources Office does not maintain an applicant database and collects applications when a certain position is open for recruitment and a vacancy announcement is posted. Applications submitted before/after the job announcement dates and/or not specifying the announcement code are not subject to review.

Once the application period is over all documents are reviewed for eligibility and against the minimum qualification requirements announced. The employing office short-lists the most qualified applicants, conducts interviews, and selects the best candidate for the position. All interviewed and tested candidates are notified by mail of the final status of their application.

U.S. Mission in Sofia provides equal opportunity and fair and equitable treatment in employment to all individuals regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, political affiliation, marital status, or sexual orientation.  The Department of State also strives to achieve equal employment opportunity in all personnel operations through continuing diversity enhancement programs.
