NASA Astronaut Grunsfeld Takes the Windy City By Storm

In the early morning hours of a balmy summer day, NASA astronaut John Grunsfeld arrived at the first of several media interviews on his two-day tour of Chicago. Grunsfeld’s trip to the Windy City was a part of NASA’s 2009 Hometown Heroes campaign. Throughout the summer, several astronauts will travel to their home regions to throw out the first pitch at Major League Baseball games as part of NASA’s celebration of the International Space Station’s 10th year in orbit. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA, or Recovery Act) was signed into law on Feb. 17. Within this $787 billion stimulus package, NASA was appropriated $1.002 billion. The funding was allocated for the agency as follows: $400 million to the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD); $400 million for the Science Mission Directorate (SMD); $150 million for the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate; $50 million for Cross-Agency Support (CAS); and $2 million for the NASA Inspector General (IG). Hometown Heroes 2009: Robert Shane Kimbrough visits the Atlanta Braves

NASA astronaut Robert Shane Kimbrough had two dreams growing up as a child; to be an astronaut and to play baseball. He grew up in the small town of Smyrna, Ga., just outside of Atlanta. Recently Kimbrough’s two passions came together while making a special appearance in his native Georgia. He spoke to the people of Atlanta about being an astronaut and was given the opportunity to participate in pregame activities for an Atlanta Braves’ game. MORE...
