Sector 56: Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services
This section provides information about census coverage and reporting for establishments in the Administrative Support and Waste Management and Remediation sector.
Establishments Covered
This sector includes establishments that perform activities to support the day-to-day operations of other organizations, and establishments that collect, treat and dispose of waste materials. Support activities are usually provided on a contract or fee basis, and may be provided in-house to affiliated organizations, commercially to unaffiliated organizations, or both. NAICS classifies establishments in the Administrative Support and Waste Management and Remediation sector using numbers that start with 56.
The Economic Census covers all administrative support establishments, and waste management and remediation establishments, that operated during all or part of calendar year 2002. Examples of establishments included in this sector are:
- Administrative support establishments that provide office administrative services; building support and security services; employment, employee leasing and temporary help services; and document preparation, customer service and telemarketing services. Also included are some services that may not typically be regarded as support services, such as travel, tour and convention services; exterminating and pest control services; landscape services; locksmiths; carpet and upholstery cleaning services; and package and labeling services.
- Waste management and remediation establishments that collect, treat and dispose of waste material. Services these establishments provide include local hauling of waste materials, operating materials recovery facilities, remediation services, septic pumping, and other miscellaneous waste management services.
Census Mail Package
Establishments that provide administrative support services, or waste management and remediation services, and have paid employees, will receive a census mail package with several types of materials. The materials are similar in content but customized to make reporting easier for different groups of covered establishments. These establishments will receive either an Information Sheet and census form, or a classification form.
Information Sheets provide general information about the census and instructions for reporting selected items on the census form. Three information sheets are available and establishments will receive the one most applicable to their kind of business activity.
Census Forms describe each data item for administrative support and waste management and remediation services establishments, and provide instructions and formats for reporting them. Census forms for these establishments are numbered AS-56xxx.
