Open Doors 2008
New data from Open Doors 2008: Report on International Educational Exchange, released today, show that the number of U.S. students studying abroad and the number of international students in the United States are both at a record high. The total international student enrollment in U.S. higher education increased by 7% this year, to an all time high of 623,805. There was an even stronger increase — of 10% — in the number of "new" international students, those enrolled for the first time at a U.S. college or university in fall 2008. Study abroad by U.S. students is up by 8%, to a record high total of 241,791 in the 2006/07 academic year, and students are continuing to go to more diverse destinations. This latest increase marks a decade of unprecedented growth in the number of American students receiving academic credit for their overseas academic experience, with an increase of close to 150%, from under 100,000 in 1996/97 to nearly a quarter of a million in 2006/07. IIE President Allan E. Goodman’s byline appears in this month's edition of eJournal USA, a publication of the U.S. Department of State, in an article about why international students should come to the U.S. for higher education.
"In an ever-changing world, being a global citizen requires constant adaptation to new ideas and circumstances," writes Goodman. "This is why the process of transformation that foreign students experience as part of a U.S. education is so important: It prepares you for the constant transformation that will be required in a 21st-century career."
