NOAA’S OCEAN EXPLORATION TECHNOLOGIES

NOAA established its Office of Ocean Exploration in 2001 and thereby instituted a program to lead the coordination and execution of ocean exploration activities across NOAA offices and in collaboration with other national stakeholders in the ocean environment and its resources. Developing and deploying advanced technology is a key element of NOAA ocean exploration. New tools and techniques will continue to lead to new discoveries in the depths.

NOAA’S ATLANTIC OCEANOGRAPHIC AND METEOROLOGICAL LABORATORY

NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory is a part of NOAA Research and one of its three “wet labs.” Situated in Miami, Fla., AOML is home to 155 employees, 98 of whom are federal. With research ranging from local Biscayne Bay water quality studies to Atlantic hurricane seasonal forecasts to global ocean circulation programs, AOML’s research activities are important to virtually every citizen in the United States. This month, AOML will celebrates its 30th year of operation.

Protection of historic shipwrecks and other submerged archaeological sites within the boundaries of NOAA’s 13 national marine sanctuaries has always been an integral part of all NOAA sanctuary management plans. Recent landmark discoveries have captured the attention and ignited the imagination of the American public. Why now? NOAA officials cite the sanctuaries’ directed focus on submerged cultural resources and cooperative strategic partnerships.

CONFRONTING CLIMATE CONFUSION: A CLIMATE TIMELINE INFORMATION TOOL TO ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING OF CLIMATE CHANGE

While climate scientists debate the details of climate change, there is evidence that much of the general public is still confused by the climate conundrum. NOAA is helping to clarify the public’s general understanding of climate dynamics by putting global climate change into perspective through its “Climate TimeLine” information tool.

NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center conducts marine biological, economic and environmental research in California and Hawaii. Research conducted by the center supports the scientific, statistical and economic needs of the NOAA Fisheries Southwest Region, two regional fishery management councils and several international commissions for highly migratory species and Antarctic resources.
