The work of the National Science Board spans a multitude of topic areas. These areas are covered
through many forms including written materials, presentations, committees and publications. Below,
several topics are listed, each providing an easy portal to NSB web site information related to
that particular area.

Education
Education is a core mission of the National Science Foundation (NSF). NSF not only promotes research,
but also shares in the responsibility for promoting quality math and science education as intertwining
objectives at all levels of education across the United States.
|
|
Environment
The junction between present and future societies lies in the global commons: the shared physical, biological,
and intellectual resources of the planet. Environmental science and technology are a vital component of productive
knowledge and thus a high priority for the Nation.
|
|
Hurricanes
Recent hurricanes - catastrophic but not unprecedented - have focused public attention on the
imperative to enhance our understanding of tropical weather systems and their multifaceted impacts,
ranging from geophysical and engineering elements to human and economic dimensions.
|
|
Infrastructure
There can be no doubt that a modern and effective research infrastructure is critical to maintaining U.S.
leadership in S&E. Enabled by information technology, a qualitatively different and new S&E
infrastructure has evolved.
|
|
International Issues
New security threats, globalization, and the rapid increase in health and environmental challenges have
generated a need to reassess the U.S. Government's role in international S&E and diplomatic institutions.
|
|
Merit Review
These annual reports to the National Science Board include data on proposals and awards and other
pertinent information, as well as descriptions of special activities that NSF has undertaken in
support of the merit review process.
|
|
Policy
The National Science Board has two important roles, to establish the policies
of the NSF within the framework of applicable national policies and to serve as an
independent body of advisors to both the President and Congress on national policy
issues.
|
|
Science and Engineering Indicators
Provides a broad base of quantitative information on the U.S. and international science and engineering
enterprise. These data are "indicators." The indicators reported in SEI are intended to contribute to an
understanding of the current environment and to inform the development of future policies.
|
|
Workforce
Science and technology have been and will continue to be engines of US economic growth and
national security. Excellence in discovery and innovation in science and engineering (S&E)
derive from an ample and well-educated workforce, researchers and educators of mathematics and science.
|
|
Other
The National Science Board is involved in many areas. In 50+ years they have spanned areas such as
the above, but also other topics like transformative research and data collections.
