About Us

Message from the Director’s Office

Hello and thank you for visiting the Maricopa County Air Quality Department’s website. We are here to serve you, providing the best air quality education and regulation for Maricopa County.

We have a tough road ahead as we collectively work to clean the air. On December 31, 2006, the region failed to reach attainment of the federal health standard for particulate matter. As a result, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency put Maricopa County under a federal mandate to clean the air. Here are the steps we’re taking to return to clean air over Valley skies:

Maricopa County along with the state, the Maricopa Association of Governments and 24 various local cities and towns developed a plan to reduce particulate matter emissions by 5% each year until the region meets federal standards.

The plan was submitted to the EPA by December 31, 2007.

Going forward, the area must show a 5% reduction of particulate matter each year until all air quality monitors show the federal standard is achieved.

This means we all need to do our part. Pollution prevention tips cover everything from reducing, or sometimes eliminating, your use of vehicles, leaf blowers, wood burning fireplaces, off-highway vehicles and trips down dirt roads in Maricopa County.

Please visit our educational outreach site at www.CleanAirMakeMore.com to learn more about how you can make a difference. Our department is committed to its role in education, regulation and enforcement of clean air standards. To achieve those commitments, We have two goals for this department:
