FIRE-II

Contact: Taneil Uttal The objective of Phase-2 of the First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) is to examine mid-continental cirrus clouds and how they affect the amount of radiant energy passing through the atmosphere. Cirrus, by virtue of their high altitudes and extensive coverage, have been identified as major factors in determining global climate. The FIRE-II field project gathered a large number of diverse remote sensors and research aircraft to examine cirrus clouds over Coffeyville, Kansas, in late 1991. ETL used its NOAA/K cloud radar, microwave and infrared radiometers, and an infrared lidar at the field site. The ETL research has included the development of techniques that combine measurements from these ground-based instruments to estimate the cirrus ice particle sizes, concentrations, and mass contents, in addition to monitoring the heights and thicknesses of the cloud layers.
