 Two alert Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys (DPAs) helped police discover the identity of Isaiah Kalebu, the defendant charged in the recent South Park attack, after recognizing him from a security camera video that was taken in another investigation . . . The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office (PAO) has been awarded a one-year grant to fund two Senior DPAs to partner with police to better investigate and prosecute gang-related violent crime . . . In June, the PAO announced its new Repeat Burglar Initiative (RBI), a partnership with police to more aggressively prosecute high-impact burglary suspects. The new initiative was in response to a growing concern within our community about residential and commercial burglary, an area of crime that significantly affects the quality of life for King County citizens . . . PAO Working Overtime To Counter End of July CrimesFive homicides in the last ten days of July have sent shockwaves throughout the County, and left our DPAs and police working overtime, along with PAO paralegal, Mary Hilt, who helped organize the 110 King County BUIs (Boating Under the Influence) investigated by law enforcement during Seafair weekend. According to a recent study on drug trends in the Seattle/King County area, last year, more people died from overdoses of prescription drugs, such as Percocet and Vicodin, than died from heroin, cocaine, or methamphetamine overdoses. Of the 256 overdose deaths reported in 2008, 153 of them (or 59%) were related to prescription drugs . . . With recent reports regarding the uptick in juvenile violence and gang-related crime, along with local news coverage of serious crimes such as the South Park attack, the shooting of a 17-year-old boy in the Leschi neighborhood, and the shooting death of a convenience store clerk in Ballard, it would be easy to assume that crime is up and that personal safety is at an all-time low . . . As part of an ongoing partnership with Canine Companions for Independence, the organization that trained the PAO's service dogs, PAO employees recently celebrated puppy "Maleng's" graduation from basic training to advanced assistance training, where he will be trained to become a full-fledged service dog . . . In RemembranceIn July, King County lost a committed public servant when King County Corrections Officer Lubennie Fernandez died in a tragic mountain biking accident. The PAO conveys its condolences to all members of the King County Corrections Guild, the Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention, and Fernandez's husband, Vincent Fernandez, who is also a King County Corrections Officer.
