Project Titles:

  • Restore Northern Tallgrass Wetland (FFS #R3EM)
  • Tallgrass Invasive Species Control (FFS #R3EN)

State: Minnesota

Project Description: Recovery Act funding has been made available in Minnesota to restore fish and wildlife habitat on private lands in partnership with private landowners through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife program in partnership with private landowners. In Minnesota, ARRA funds through the Partners program will go toward improving habitat in the northern tallgrass prairie in the western part of the state. Funds will be used to restore prairie wetlands and control invasive species. The work will benefit several species of waterfowl such as mallard, pintail, and blue-winged teal, and several grassland dependent bird species such as the bobolink and northern harriers. Resident wildlife will benefit as well. Partners program projects are typically constructed by local contractors, channeling dollars to the local economy.

The Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program focuses on improving habitat for federal trust resources: migratory birds, federally-listed endangered or threatened species, and interjurisdictional fish. In Minnesota, the program the program supports restoration of wetlands, native prairies, and riparian zones for migratory bird and endangered species habitat. It also focuses resources on control of invasive species in native habitats. Since this program began in Minnesota in 1987, more than 118,000 acres of wetlands and upland habitat have been restored or enhanced, benefiting wildlife, improving soil, water and air quality, and increasing recreational opportunities.
