Cerritos Town Hall Meeting
A
ugust 13, 2009 - AQMD and the City of Cerritos will host a town hall meeting on August 18 to discuss air quality issues including a recent  U.S. EPA report on air toxic risk in Cerritos.

AQMD gets $45.4 million federal grant to develop plug-in hybrid trucks
August 5, 2009
– President Obama announced $2.4 billion in grants to accelerate the development of U.S.-manufactured next-generation batteries and electric vehicles. AQMD’s grant will help develop a fully integrated, production plug-in hybrid system for delivery trucks and shuttle buses. The goal is to produce a fleet of 378 vehicles. Smog foe honored for life’s work
August 13, 2009
The state Air Resources Board presented its lifetime achievement Haagen-Smit award to 85-year-old Hank Wedaa of Yorba Linda. Wedaa, a former AQMD Board chairman, was honored for his contributions to improving the region’s air-quality regulations.

State News: Wipeout; California wave power project scuttled
August 13, 2009
P.G.& E. recently dropped one of its two 40-megawatt wave-farm projects planned for the Northern California coast. The Mendocino project is just the latest setback for wave power projects that have washed-away in recent months. P.G.& E. will continue to move forward on a similar project in Humboldt and hopes to file an application in 2010.

National News: U.S. EPA joins EcoCAR!
August 13, 2009
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency joined the EcoCar consortium of government, industry and academic leaders dedicated to advancing clean, efficient automotive technology. EcoCar’s Next Challenge is a three-year competition to redesign and reengineer a 2009 Saturn VUE to minimize fuel consumption and emissions.

National News: California ranked No. 1 on cutting thirst for oil
August 13, 2009 The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) gave California the top spot for reducing its appetite for oil and adopting policies to make cars more efficient and expand the use of renewable fuels. California’s low-carbon fuel standards also helped propel the state to the top of the NRDC clean-energy report.

National News: Plug-in hybrids raising powerful questions

How much more electricity will be needed when plug-in cars are standard, and where will that power come from? Those questions are being addressed in a study by the Electric Power Research Institute. Of particular interest is the potential impact on grids due to increased electric demand by these vehicles.

National News: 'Safe' ozone levels unhealthy for some, small study finds
August 12, 2009Researchers found that on average, exercisers' lung function deteriorated after several hours of exposure to ozone levels of 70 parts per billion, below the federal health standard of 75 ppb. The findings suggest that when healthy young adults exercise outside with ozone levels of 70 ppb for several hours -- taking a long hike, for instance -- about half will suffer respiratory symptoms like coughing or pain during deep breathing.

National News: Generating domestic supply of carbon offsets
August 11, 2009
Projects in the emerging carbon market are cropping up across the United States in anticipation of "cap and trade" provisions in the climate bill. Two popular means of generating offsets are converting cultivated fields to their natural state and reforesting patches of land, to act as a "carbon sink" to absorb emissions spewed elsewhere. More


National News: Little feet multiply parents' carbon footprint 5.7 times
August 11, 2009
An Oregon State study concluded that a child will add about 9,441 metric tons of CO2 to the carbon legacy of an average parent. The amount contributed by one child also is 20 times more than one parent's carbon savings from activities like driving a fuel-efficient car, recycling and using efficient light bulbs and appliances.

International News: China breaks ground on 10-gigawatt wind farm
August 11, 2009
China’s National Energy Administration, has taken a major stride to increase the nations use of wind power. China plans to generate 3 percent of its total electricity from non-hydro renewable energy by increasing wind power capacity to 100 GW by 2020. The government has plans for six 10GW-level wind power facilities in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Xinjiang, Hebei and Jiangsu provinces. More

National News: Research shows how organic carbon compounds released from trees affects air quality
August 7, 2009

New research methods helped scientists at California Institute of Technology (CalTech) discover the atmospheric impact of epoxides, a chemical formed from isoprene emitted by many deciduous plants and trees. The research published in the journal Science found that epoxides stick to particles in the atmosphere, growing them and lowering visibility in the atmosphere. Researchers recommend isoprene emission levels be a criteria when planting trees in polluted urban areas.
