Welcome to Brookhaven National Laboratory. BNL attracts
more than 4,500 visiting scientists from all over the world each
year to perform scientific research and work with our staff.
To support our guests, there are 422 on-site housing units.
These units are comprised of 66 family-style apartments, 46
efficiency apartments, 265 dormitory rooms, 13 Guest House rooms, 30
seasonal houses and 2 year round private houses.

Reservations must be cancelled by 1:00 p.m. on the day of arrival. If a cancellation
is not received, a "No Show" charge of one night will be posted to the
reservation. Applicable room charges will be incurred for requests to hold
"No Shows" or the determined period designated.

- Payment for all housing is due upon arrival. The housing office accepts cash, checks,
travelers checks, Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
- Apartment Telephone Charges: Telephones are provided in all units. Charges are posted
to your bill.
- Dormitory Telephone Charges : Telephones are provided in all rooms. Residents may
receive calls from anywhere and make on site or 800 number calls. Prepaid calling cards are
required to make off site calls.
- Requests for extensions beyond the periods stated in the Policies and Procedures section must be made
in writing by the Department Chair or Division Manager to the Staff Services Housing Supervisor. Extension
requests beyond two years must be approved by the program Deputy Director for Science & Technology.
- Televisions equipped with satellite connection in all apartments, Guest House rooms, Guest House lobby
and dormitory lobbies.
- Computers with high speed internet connection are available in all dormitory lounges.
- Coin operated laundry facilities in Building 363 located in the apartment area. Laundry facilities are
also available in the Cavendish and Curie dormitories.
- Both Ethernet and Cisco Wireless Access Points (WAPs) connections are available in all dormitories and
the Guest House rooms.
- Each dormitory hall has its own on-site telephone and a pay phone in the common area.
- Each apartment room has its own public phone. Charges for all off-site telephone calls
are the responsibility of the individual renting the room. Bills must be paid upon departure.
- DSL connections in the apartments and the cottages.
- A DVD loaner program, based on availability.
- Rollaway beds, high chairs and cribs are available upon request and availability.
NOTE: A rental fee will be charged for rollaway beds borrowed 7
days or more.
- Housekeeping in all dormitories and the Guest House.
- The harboring of pets in the apartments with the exception of connecting efficiencies. Residents must
complete an Approval to Harbor Pet Form located at the Housing Front Desk.
- An off-site housing coordinator that assist visitors in
locating rental properties in the local area.

The Guest House is a hotel-style facility consisting of 13 private rooms
equipped with Ethernet connection, satellite television, coffeemaker and two
twin size beds. Each room is air conditioned and has a private bathroom. DSL
connection and Satellite television is also provided in the lobby.

The Cavendish house is a male dormitory consisting of 83 private single
occupancy rooms equipped with air conditioning, Ethernet connection and
telephones. All rooms are fully furnished and supplied with linens. There
are 4 common kitchens, 4 common bathrooms and a laundry room. Cookware and
utensils are not provided. Satellite television and 2 computers with DSL
connection are provided in the lobby. A wireless modem is also provided in
the lobby. All computers, wireless notebooks or other network devices onsite
must be registered if they are to be used on the BNL Network.

The Fleming Dormitory is primarily a male dormitory consisting of 52
private single occupancy rooms equipped with air conditioning, Ethernet
connection and telephones. All rooms are fully furnished and
supplied with linens. There are 6 common bathrooms and 2 common kitchens.
Cookware and utensils are not provided. A satellite television and a
computer with DSL connection are provided in the lobby. A wireless modem is
also provided in the lobby. All computers, wireless notebooks or other
network devices onsite must be registered if they are to be used on the BNL
Network.

Each unit has a kitchenette, a bathroom and is equipped with DSL connection,
satellite television and a microwave. They are fully furnished and supplied

Apartments are available in 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedrooms. They are fully furnished and supplied with

The Cottages are seasonal accommodations available June through October.
They are fully furnished with a full size kitchen, bathroom and either 3 or
4 bedrooms. Utilities are included in the rental price. Each cottage
is supplied with linens, kitchen utensils, cookware, a microwave and DSL
connection. All computers, wireless notebooks or other network devices
onsite must be registered if they are to be used on the BNL Network.

Procedures
Brookhaven National Laboratory housing is for the temporary accommodation of personnel appointed to
participate in Laboratory programs and not for the long-term or recurrent short-term use by regular employees.
Assignments of housing are limited to the periods indicated below and are subject to the availability of
appropriate accommodations.
The following specify the conditions of assignment of Laboratory housing. Requests for extensions beyond
the periods stated below must be made in writing by the Department Chair or Division Manager to the Staff
Services Housing Supervisor. Extension requests beyond two years must first be approved by the
Deputy Director for Science and Technology.
- Newly appointed scientific and professional staff members and Research Associates with accompanying
family members may be furnished with family accommodations for up to three months from the date of arrival
to begin work, except during the summer period, June 1 to mid-September.
- Single individuals in the above categories, on arrival to begin work, may be furnished with dormitory
accommodations for up to one year, or efficiency apartments (single room or connecting) for up to three
months, except during the summer period, June 1 to mid-September.
- Visiting Scientists, Collaborators and Guests may be furnished with on-site accommodations.
Accommodations provided will be as described in A or B above for up to one year, subject to the Department
Chair's approval when the appointment includes any part or all of the summer period, June 1 to mid-September.
- Collaborators and Guests who visit the Laboratory intermittently may be furnished with a dormitory room. Other types of accommodations
may be assigned to those in these categories when accompanied by their families, with the approval of the
Department Chair required if the period of residence is a month or more.
- Junior Research Associates may be furnished on-site accommodations for the term of appointment, subject
to the Department Chair's approval and not to exceed two years. The type of accommodations will be described
in A or B above.
- Student Collaborators may be furnished with dormitory accommodations for the term of appointment.
- Facility User Teams, which include senior staff, students and technicians designated by, and approved
for on-site housing by a Department Chair, may be assigned family-type accommodations up to two years in
accordance with the BNL regulations for On-site Team Housing-Designated User Facilities. Any requests for
extensions beyond two years must be approved by the Deputy Director for Science and Technology.
- Personnel assigned on-call duties by a Department Chair may be furnished with on-site accommodations for
the duration of their on-call status.
- Trustees, visiting committee members, speakers consultants, conference attendees and others temporarily
at the site for an activity related to BNL, BSA or DOE may be furnished with on-site accommodations in the
Guest House, family units, or dormitories as available in that order.
- On a space available basis, housing may be assigned to employees having an urgent, short-term
requirement for temporary accommodations. Assignments in this category will not exceed ninety days nor be
made during the summer period, June 1 to mid-September.
- Use of the Brookhaven Energy House and the Danish House is assigned by the Laboratory Director.
Responsibilities
Tenants are responsible for:
- Reasonable care for the unit occupied and the furnishings therein. Tenants may not alter the unit in any
way.
- Reporting maintenance or safety problems promptly to the Housing Office during normal working hours or to
Security at other times.
- Tenants may not sublet any portion of the unit assigned nor permitting occupancy by any person not
authorized by the Housing Office.
- Payment of rents and telephone bills to the BNL Housing Office are due upon issuance of bills.
- Payments of all outstanding balances must be paid to the Housing Office before departure.
Staff Services is responsible for:
- Management and administration of all assigned housing units; formal Housing Agreements are required when tenancy is for thirty days or
longer.
- Authorizing exceptions to the procedure set forth above when such is in the best interest of the Laboratory
or to alleviate extreme personal hardship - in consultation with department/division management and/or member
of the Directorate as appropriate.
The Deputy Director for Science & Technology is responsible for:
- Determining summer allocation of housing quotas to each Scientific Department.
- Informing Staff Services of the above housing allocations.
- Approving extensions beyond procedure.
The Office of Scientific Personnel is responsible for:
- Supplying Staff Services with the pertinent information concerning the housing requirements of new
scientific appointees.
The Director's Office, Department Chair and Division Managers or their
designees are responsible for:
- Designating to Staff Services the individuals and Facility User Teams to be assigned housing within the
summer allocations made by the Deputy Director for Science & Technology.
- Supplying the Housing Office with the necessary information concerning the housing requirements of the
individuals designated for summer housing allocations and during the year as required.
The Office of Educational Programs is responsible for:
- Supplying Staff Services with the pertinent information on the housing requirements of Student
Collaborators, semester students, professors and counselors.
