The historic James R. Browning U.S. Courthouse is located at the corner of Seventh and Mission Streets in San Francisco. Opened in 1905, the courthouse is considered one of America’s most beautiful public buildings, grandly constructed to represent the increasing importance of the United States. The only public entrance is 95 Seventh Street.
The building is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The public is welcome to visit the exhibits in the first floor lobby during those hours. There is also a small café that is open daily until 2:00 p.m. Each adult entering the building needs to pass through security and bring a photo ID. The court offers free regular public tours of the building and courtrooms. Tours take approximately 45 minutes, covering the old post office lobby on the first floor and available courtrooms. No reservations are required for individuals to join the public tour. Enter the building and meet the docent tour guide in the lobby. Groups of more than ten people must arrange a tour in advance.
