Epidemiological/Long-Term Cohort Studies

Comprehensive International Program for Research on AIDS (CIPRA)

The goals of CIPRA are to provide long-term support to developing countries to (1) plan and implement a comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment research agenda relevant to their populations; and (2) enhance the infrastructure necessary to conduct such research. The program provides flexibility for applicants with different levels of research capabilities.

International Epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA)

A data analysis center that compiles data from DAIDS-funded international research use by DAIDS-funded investigators to answer population level questions on HIV variants and resistance, HIV pathogenesis in different settings, success of HAART therapy, treated history of HIV in different populations, success of prevention strategies, or vaccine related questions. The center also fosters collaborations with other large databases.

Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS)

An ongoing prospective study of the natural and treated histories of HIV-1 infection in 6,973 homosexual and bisexual men at sites located in Baltimore, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles.

Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study (PHACS)

A multi-institute initiative (Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development [NICHD] and NIAID) investigating the long-term safety of fetal/infant exposure to antiretroviral drugs, as well as the effects of perinatally acquired HIV infection on adolescent development.

Women’s HIV Interdisciplinary Network (WHIN)

A research program focusing on HIV pathogenesis in women, including gender differences in immunology, pharmacology, response to therapy, complications of therapy, and immunological, virological, genetic, and behavioral aspects of transmission.

Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS)

A cohort study established in 1993 and currently following 2,404 HIV-infected and uninfected women to examine the natural history of HIV among women in an era of combination treatments referred to as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
