The Iowa City area includes Coralville, North Liberty, Solon, and other small towns with a total population of about 120,000. Twenty miles to the north is Cedar Rapids, Iowa's second largest city. The Eastern Iowa Airport provides convenient connections for worldwide travel.

The University of Iowa is a major national research university located on a 1,900-acre campus on the Iowa River. The university enrolls nearly 30,000 students in 11 colleges—Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, Medicine, Education, Engineering, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Public Health, plus the Graduate College.

International students from more than 100 countries make up about 7 percent of the UI enrollment. There are about 1,700 faculty and 13,000 staff members.

This area is part of Iowa's Technology Corridor—a multicounty region comprising the diverse communities of the Iowa City–Cedar Rapids metropolitan area.
