07/29/2009 - Dairy Coalition Meeting
Sen. Bernie Sanders, along with Senator Patrick Leahy and 11 other senators from dairy states, met with Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack as they continued to work toward short- and long-term solutions to the economic crisis gripping dairy farmers. The coalition called for the USDA to raise its floor price for purchasing dairy products so as to help stabilize falling milk prices.

On July 22, 2009, Senator Sanders met with leaders of the Vermont chapter of Future Farmers of America. President Jonathan Mason (right) of Enosburg Falls and Vice President Elizabeth Flint (left) from Highgate Center both plan to go on to study agriculture in higher education and pursue careers in the industry.

Senator Bernie Sanders, chairman of the Green Jobs and New Economy Subcommittee of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, chaired a subcommittee hearing on clean energy jobs and economic growth. The governors of Colorado, Washington, New Jersey and North Dakota, three city mayors and one state legislator testified at the hearing.

On Saturday, June 6, Senator Sanders traveled to Brattleboro, Vermont to enjoy the Strolling of the Heifers parade and festivities. Below he is seen walking the parade route, watching participants, being interviewed by WTSA's Tim Johnson and milking a Holstein cow at the celebrity milking contest.
06/02/2009 - Health Care Town Meeting with T.R. Reid
Over 325 people came out to Senator Sanders “Town Meeting on Health Care” Monday, June 1st. Guest speak TR Reid, who made the PBS Frontline documentary, “Sick Around the World” shared his experience as to how five countries he visited are able to provide comprehensive universal healthcare to all of their citizens. Also on the panel and pictured below are Dr. Monica Romanko who currently practices as an attending Physician at Milton Family Practice and serves as the Assistant Clinical Professor and Associate Residency Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at the UVM School of medicine, Dr. John Brumsted, President of the Vermont Medical Society and the chief quality officer at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, and Dr. Deborah Richter who practices family medicine in Cambridge, Vermont and is a past president of Physicians for a National Health Program. Bernie held five Town Meetings over the Memorial Day weekend in Richford, Orleans, Hardwick, Stowe, and Bradford with some 500 people coming out to discuss the major issues of the day—including the economy, health care, and energy issues.

A group of about 55 students from Woodstock Union Middle School met with Senator Sanders on the steps of the United States Capitol to discuss the key issues facing our country today.
05/13/2009 - Health Care Rally
Senator Sanders spoke at a Capitol Hill rally hosted by the California Nurses Association. As part of National Nurses Week, the association was showing their strong support for Sander’s state-administered, single-payer health care legislation, S. 703, and a similar proposal in the U.S. House. Senator Bernie Sanders congratulated Vermont recipients of the 2009 Star of Life award, which honors EMS workers for their commitment to their job and excellence in service. Receiving the award were William Collins (Bennington Rescue Squad), Wendy Fitzgerald (Rutland Regional Ambulance Service) and Dale R. Long (Bennington Rescue Squad). Jim Finger of the Vermont Ambulance Association presented Senator Sanders with an award recognizing his efforts on behalf of first responders in Vermont.
04/28/2009 - Audrey Kiely, Poetry Out Loud Contestant
Senator Bernie Sanders met with Vermont's Poetry Out Loud contestant, Audrey Kiely, and her father, Philip Kiely, of Morrisville, Vermont. Created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest that encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. The program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
04/23/2009 - Milton Community Youth Coalition
Senator Bernie Sanders met with Terry Melton, program coordinator for the Milton Community Youth Coalition, and six teenage volunteers to discuss their alternative spring break trip addressing homelessness in Washington and also to highlight their mission of peer leadership at the coalition.

04/22/2009 - Sen. Sanders Meets With Vermont Upward Bound Students
A group of about 10 Vermont Upward Bound students met with Senator Sanders to discuss their recent participation in a successful high school greening competition hosted by Johnson State College. The students, from high schools throughout northern Vermont, each submitted a formal proposal detailing projects they would undertake to make their schools greener. They also held creative performances illustrating their understanding of current environmental challenges. The Upward Bound program prepares students for success in high school and enrollment in college by offering a range of academic, counseling, social, and recreational activities.

Senator Bernie Sanders met with Kacey O'Brien of Burlington, Vermont who was chosen to participate in the People to People World Leadership Program. The program organizes and promotes global educational travel opportunities including to Washington, D.C. where top students in grades 5-8 meet with government leaders and public speakers.
