USN names Board of Regents room after former chairman

University President Charles Rice, M.D., and incoming Board or Regents Chairman Ronald Blanck, M.D., share the honor of unveiling a portrait of former chairman Everett Alvarez, Jr. This painting graces the entranceway of the newly dedicated Board of Regents room.
The Uniformed Services University dedicated its Board of Regents room to former Chairman Everett Alvarez Jr., November 2008.

Mr. Alvarez provided guidance and support to the nation's School of Medicine and Graduate School of Nursing throughout his incumbency.

"Your contributions are too numerous to count, but it is perhaps even more important to note that many credit the very continued existence of this remarkable institution to your care, tenacity and deep belief in its mission," said University President Charles L. Rice, M.D.

Mr. Alvarez, a long-time champion of the University, acted in many leadership capacities throughout his tenure.

"Your service to our nation and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences is widely recognized as extraordinary," said Dr. Rice. "You have served this institution for over 20 years, serving two terms as a member and two terms as chair of the Board of Regents."Mr. Alvarez's career in public service began long before he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the USU Board of Regents. In fact, his experience as a Navy combat pilot is a tale of inspiration for many.

He was the first aviator shot down over Vietnam and one of the longest held prisoners of war in military history.

After his release from Hanoi's Hoa Lo prison, and his retirement from the Navy in 1983, Mr. Alvarez assumed leadership posts with the Peace Corps and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Even today, his impact continues to be felt in the public sector. Recently Mr. Alvarez was named a "great public servant" by the Council for Excellence in Government.

The former chairman is among 25 honorees being recognized for significant contributions to achieving excellence in government over the past 25 years. In receiving this honor, Mr. Alvarez stands among a venerable cast of "greats" including: Al Gore, Sandra Day O'Conner, Colin Powell, Anthony Fauci and Donna Shalala.
