Introduction

Navy diversThe occupational and environmental medicine residency is a two-year graduate medical education program designed to prepare physicians for a career in the specialty of occupational and environmental medicine. Occupational and environmental medicine is the medical specialty devoted to the prevention and management of occupational and environmental injury, illness, and disability, and the promotion of health and productivity of workers, their families, and communities.

The occupational and environmental medicine residency is part of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) program of the National Capital Consortium, which sponsors over 40 military residency programs in the Washington, DC area. The occupational and environmental medicine residency program located at the Uniformed Services University (USUHS) has been fully accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since 1992. To date, we have graduated over 80 residents and graduates of the program are expected to take and successfully pass the certifying examination offered by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
