Research Day
The Annual Faculty Senate Research Day / Graduate Student Colloquium highlights clinical and basic science research achievements at USU and its affiliated institutions, and promotes research collaborations both within USU and with its adjunct faculty at various sites.
This two day event is open to everyone. Highlights include:
- Workshops and Symposia. Selected faculty members are invited to speak on selected topics of interest. These topics are selected from current trends in the scientific community.
- Poster presentations. Students and faculty from USU and its affiliated institutions are grouped into several concurrent sessions to present their posters to interested participants.
- Postdoctoral Fellows Platform Presentations. The Postdoctoral Fellows Association select individuals who have submitted abstracts to present their scientific work.
- Plenary Lecture and Keynote Speaker. Plenary speakers are selected as well as a Keynote speaker, chosen by the Research Day Committee, to give a lecture on a topic that has been chosen as the theme for the Research Day event. Past speakers have included Robert Balaban, Ph.D., National Heart Lung Blood Institute, NIH and Olli-P. Kallioniemi, MD, Ph.D., Cancer Genetics Branch, The Human Genome Research Institute.
Graduate Student Colloquium
The Graduate Student Colloquium is composed of platform and poster presentations of original research conducted by students in our graduate programs. It is sponsored by the graduate faculty and graduate students for the purpose of promoting scholarly interchange between graduate students and the academic community. It also serves to recognize the pursuit of research excellence by USU graduate students.
The Colloquium Lecture is delivered each year by an invited distinguished scientist. In 1990, it was named the John W. Bullard Colloquium Lecture in honor of Dr. Bullard who served as Assistant Dean for Graduate Education from November 1976 to November 1990. It was under his leadership that the Graduate Research Colloquium was initially established. Past Bullard Lecturers have been Drs. Francis Collins, Eric Shooter, Zack Hall, June Osborne, Barry Bloom, Steven Hyman, Roger Perlmutter, Mark Jenkins, and James Darnell, Jr.
Highlights:
- Premeeting workshops. These concurrent events include an exploration of career development for graduate students in the health sciences. Past workshops were: The Internet as a Teaching Tool, Emerging Issues in Technology Transfer and Patent Law, Safety Committees that Affect Research, and Career Development for Graduate Students.
- Graduate Student Oral Presentations. Graduate students are selected to present an oral presentation on their research efforts. Students submit abstracts for the Colloquium and selections are made by graduate faculty.
- Bullard Lecture. The Bullard Lecture is held after the graduate students oral presentations. Each year, a distinguished scientist is selected by the Graduate Education Committee and invited to speak to graduate students, faculty and staff.
Seminars
As part of the graduate student curriculum, many of the Graduate Programs/Departments invite speakers to present their work in seminar series each month. Graduate students are also active participants in presenting their scientific work at seminars. Other offices at the University provide seminars on topics to include grant writing seminars, seminars on IRB and human use, and faculty development seminars.
Open House
On February 26, 2007, the annual Open House for prospective graduate students will be held. Prospective students will be invited to attend the Open House and either stay with students who currently attend USU or stay in a local hotel. The program consists of an welcome and overview of the University and the Graduate Programs, presented by Dr. Eleanor Metcalf, Associate Dean for Graduate Education. Additionally, two students will give a presentation of their ongoing research. After this initial overview, prospective students will meet with their respective Program Directors, take a tour of the University, have time to view graduate student posters, get a more in-depth laboratory experience by visiting a student�s lab, and/or just have time to relax and enjoy the surroundings ere at USU. The afternoon consists of departmental program interviews and meetings, and a Wine and Cheese Party with USU faculty, staff, and students.
Commencement
The Commencement Exercise is held the third Saturday in May, which is also Armed Forces Day, at Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Constitution Hall. This commencement is for all students - graduate students, medical students, and nursing students. Graduate students who complete their degrees during the academic year are invited to participate in the commencement exercise.
