  Davit (J-Bar) Removal

Source: USS Hopper (DDG 70)

Description: IAW WFIP 122, J-bar davits must be removed prior to any 5-inch gun shoot on Arleigh Burke-class ships. To remove these davits, it is recommended to have at least three pairs of hands on the davit at all times. The davit is awkward to remove and often one person lifts it up from the bottom, while another person is used to catch it. Three people should be in control of the davit at all times. Another individual should use the attached tag lines to ensure that the end of the davit is not facing the direction that the others are lowering it, as the davit comes down. The rocking of the ship and other uncontrollable factors require positive control of the davit at all times as the davit is very heavy and cumbersome.
