FOD Prevention (Hornet Gun/Gun Bay)

Source: VFA-102

Description: If Form-In-Place (FIP) sealant is found to be corroded upon FA-18E/F Door 4 removal, a technique that squadron ordnancemen use in the repair is to tape a plastic bag to the inside of the door 4 access area prior to scraping away any old sealant or performing any corrosion prevention. This simple maintenance technique will help prevent FOD-induced gun jams, and gun/gun bay FOD (thereby saving hundreds of hours of related work). It will also help prevent occurrences of a jammed gun due to FOD.

Data/Validation: VFA-102 has had zero occurrences of gun bay FOD since implementing this simple procedure.
