SafeTips
Hammering

  • Usually you need to hold the nail or spike when you are getting it started. If it is in a very awkward or otherwise dangerous position, you can hold it with a pair of pliers while you get it started.
  • If you use your other hand, swing the hammer more gently so that if you do miss and hit yourself, it won't be as severe. Try keeping the elbow of the arm holding the hammer close or on the surface that you are driving the nail or spike into. This will be more precise.
  • Hold the nail or spike near the head while starting it. This way, if you do hit the holding hand, some of the force of the hammer head will dissipate before your holding hand gets squeezed between the hammer head and the surface.
  • Once the nail or spike is started, then start to hit it more forcefully.
  • Assuming you are hammering a nail, once the nail has been started and doesn't need to be supported, move your other hand away. Seems obvious, but this is a common error.
