Annual Employee Survey

Federal agencies are required by law to conduct an Annual Employee Survey (AES). The survey consists of a series of questions prescribed in regulation and is designed to address overall employee satisfaction as well as leadership and management practices that contribute to our agency performance.

The National Archives (NARA) administers the AES in odd-numbered years. In even-numbered years, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) administers the Federal Human Capital Survey (FHCS). The FHCS serves as NARA’s AES for that calendar year. In addition to addressing the AES questions prescribed by regulation, the FHCS also asks employees to respond to additional questions. For this reason, the surveys may look slightly different. You can learn more about the general requirements of the AES on the OPM web site.
