CDC Health Information for International Travel 2010 Is Now Available!

Did you know?

  • CDC published its first Yellow Book, titled Immunization Information for International Travel, in 1967 as a small pamphlet with recommendations for the prevention of illnesses such as cholera, smallpox, yellow fever, and malaria.
  • Until around 1997, the Yellow Book was mailed to about 15,000 recipients on a mailing list.
  • The Yellow Book first became available online (in addition to the hard copy) in 2002.
  • It’s grown! The 1967 edition was about the size of an index card and had 120 pages. The 2010 edition is about the size of a regular sheet of typing paper and has 528 pages.

Every two years, CDC publishes CDC Health Information for International Travel, commonly known as the 'Yellow Book.' The Yellow Book has become a trusted reference for health-care providers and travelers worldwide. It is written primarily for health-care providers, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists who give pre-travel health care. However, the travel industry, multinational corporations, missionary and volunteer organizations, and individuals or families who vacation abroad also find the Yellow Book an excellent resource.

Some interesting topics in the 2010 Yellow Book include:

  • Information about the pre-travel consultation
  • Vaccine requirements and recommendations
  • Information about malaria risk and prevention
  • Updated disease risk maps
  • Altitude illness, jet lag, and motion sickness
  • Injuries and safety
  • Medical tourism
  • Finding health care during travel
  • Specific health insights about nine popular tourist destinations and itineraries
  • Recommendations about traveling with infants and children
  • Advising travelers with specific needs, such as those with chronic medical conditions or weakened immune systems, those who are going to live abroad, air crews, and humanitarian aid workers.
  • Health considerations for newly arrived adoptees, immigrants, and refugees
