The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, 2009 (ARRA) [Pub. L. 111-5] was signed into law by President Barack Obama on February 17, 2009. ARRA includes appropriations and tax law changes totaling approximately $787 billion to support government wide efforts to stimulate the economy. Goals of the statute include the preservation or creation of jobs and the promotion of an economic recovery, as well as the investment in transportation, environmental protection and other infrastructure providing long-term economic benefits. FTA Programs

To carry out its mission, FTA administers a variety of grant programs to serve local communities throughout the United States.

FTA is one of 11 operating administrations within the U.S. Department of Transportation with 517 employees located in Washington, DC and 10 regional offices across the nation. FTA provides stewardship of combined formula and discretionary programs totaling more than $10B to support a variety of locally planned, constructed, and operated public transportation systems throughout the U.S., including buses, subways, light rail, commuter rail, streetcars, monorail, passenger ferry boats, inclined railways, and people movers.
