What types of career opportunities are available at the NTSB?

The NTSB has approximately 400 employees located at its Headquarters in Washington, DC, and in regional field offices in Ashburn, VA, Parsippany, NJ, Atlanta, GA, Miami, FL, Chicago, IL, Denver, CO., Arlington, TX, Seattle, WA and Gardena, CA.  These employees work in a variety of transportation, transportation related, and administrative support occupations such as Aerospace Engineer, Air Safety Investigator, Transportation Safety Specialist, Highway Accident Investigator, Human Performance Investigator, Human Resources Specialist, Attorney-Advisor, Contract Specialist, Writer-Editor and Information Technology Specialist.  Career opportunities are available in all of these occupations.

How do I apply for a job at the NTSB?

The NTSB utilizes USAJOBS as its One-Stop recruitment web site.  To apply for positions at NTSB, visit the USAJOBS Web site .  All NTSB job opportunities are posted on the USAJOBS web site through specific vacancy announcements.

What is USAJOBS?

USAJOBS is administered by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), and it is the official job site of the Federal government. USAJOBS is the one resource where you can search for jobs, create multiple resumes, receive e-mail notifications, access information regarding your application status, and find general information about Federal employment. You may obtain more specific information from the USAJOBS Web site .

How can I determine if I am eligible to apply for a position at the NTSB?

Check the vacancy announcement on USAJOBS for the position you are interested in to see if you are eligible to apply.  Click on the tab labeled “Overview”, and read the section on who may be considered.

Where can I find information on the qualifications that are required for a position?

Check the vacancy announcement on USAJOBS.  Click on the tab labeled “Qualifications and Evaluations” for a description of the experience required for the position, and how your experience will be evaluated. 

If I apply for a position and I am not selected, whom should I contact to find out why?

If you are not selected for a position, you will receive a letter from the NTSB Human Resources Division.  You may contact the human resource specialist listed on the vacancy announcement for further details.

The benefits available to a specific Federal employee varies depending on the type of appointment he/she received and the options available to, or selected by the employee at the time of his/her appointment. 

What types of work schedules are available for NTSB employees?

The NTSB offers a wide variety of flexible work schedules that will enable employees to balance their work lives, personal lives, and the needs of their families.  In addition to the traditional workweek of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, employees can receive approval to work an alternative schedule.  Employees may receive approval for a flexible schedule that allows them to work an 8-hour non-traditional tour, or either of two compressed work schedules.

Telework Program


What is telework?

The terms “telework,” “telecommuting,” “flexible workplace,” “remote work,” and “alternate work location” are all used to refer to work done outside of the traditional on-site work environment.  At the NTSB, telework refers to arrangements where employees may be approved to work from home on a part-time of full-time basis depending on the nature and type of duties that the employee performs.

How do I find a telework job with the NTSB?

Check the NTSB vacancy announcements on USAJOBS.  Click on the tab labeled “Benefits and Other Info”.  Please note that although the position may be identified here as one where telework is available, the decision to allow an individual to telework is generally not made until after he/she is hired, and is dependent on the duties and work assignments of the position and administrative approval.
