Fungus name

• Enter a genus and/or species name.
• To do a left to right wildcard search append a * to the end of the search criteria. For example av* in the species box would select all of the species starting with av. Sept* in the genus box and cor* in the species box would also be an acceptable entry.
• If you only enter a genus name then all of the species for that genus will be selected.
• To include variety/subspecies names append a * to the end of the specific epithet OR enter a genus in the Genus field and enter the variety/subspecies name in the Species field (for example, elynae var. elynae).
• In order to include synonyms in the search, enter a complete name in both the Genus and Species fields and select "Use synonyms" under Options.
• You may enter only one of the following: fungus name, fungus group, fungus order.

Fungus Group

• The categories provided are derived from The Dictionary of the Fungi, the Anamorph-Teleomorph database maintained by the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures and a list of hyphomycetes provided by Keith Seifert.
• You may enter only one of the following: fungus name, fungus group, fungus order.
• Fungus Group alone may not be used for a search.

Fungus Order

• The orders provided are derived from The Dictionary of the Fungi.
• You may enter only one of the following: fungus name, fungus group, fungus order.
• Fungus Order alone may not be used for a search.

To see the genera included in an order enter the order name.

Order:

To determine the placement of a genus enter the genus name.

Genus:

Host name

• Enter a genus and/or species name.
• If you know only the common name you may use a common name to search for a scientific name.
• To do a left to right wildcard search append a * to the end of the search criteria. For example aest* in the species box would select all of the species starting with aest. Trit* in the genus box and aest* in the species box would also be an acceptable entry.
• If you only enter a genus name then all of the species for that genus will be selected.
• To include variety/subspecies names append a * to the end of the specific epithet OR enter a genus in the Genus field and enter the variety/subspecies name in the Species field (for example, vulgaris subsp. vulgaris).
• In order to include synonyms in the search, enter a complete name in both the Genus and Species fields and select "Use synonyms" under Options.
• You may search on a host name OR family.

Host Family

• You may enter a host family or click on one of the letter groups to view and select a family.
• You may search on a host name OR family.
• Host Family alone may not be used for a search.

Locality

• You may enter one of the following, but not both:
  (1) a country/territory and/or U.S. state/Canadian province
  (2) a region/continent
• Locality alone may not be used for a search.

Collector

• Enter part or all of the collector's last name. For example Farr will select all of the records with the first four letters of the collector = Farr.
• Collector alone may not be used for a search.

Year collected

• To search by year collected, enter a single year, e.g. 1997.
• Year alone may not be used for a search.

BPI number

• Enter the 6- or 7-digit BPI accession number.
• To search for multiple numbers use the format 000001,000002,000003 or '000001','000002','000003'.
• You do not need to enter data in any other fields when searching by BPI number. Criteria in other fields will be ignored if a BPI number is entered.

Type

• Checking Type will return records for type specimens only.

Format

• List format displays fungus and host names only. You may click on a BPI number to view the full record.
• Label format displays the label data for a specimen. You may also choose to include annotations and/or ex-herbarium information in the results.

Use synonyms

• If you check Use Synonyms for the fungus name, synonym and alternate state names in the database will be included in the search.
• Checking Use Synonyms for the host name will include synonyms from the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN), Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the PLANTS Database, Natural Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
• Nomenclature information will be displayed at the top of the search results.
• To use this option, you must enter a complete name in both the Genus and Species fields.

Build a loan request

• If you check Build a loan request, you may add specimens from your search results to a list to submit to the Herbarium Manager online or print for your own use. The list may include results from different searches.
• Please review the BPI loan policy before submitting a loan request.

Include other herbaria in search

• You may include computerized specimen records from the Washington State University Plant Pathology Department Herbarium (WSP) and/or Purdue University Arthur Herbarium (PUR) in your search.
• You may also search for WSP specimens alone.

Specimens in the U.S. National Fungus Collections. The U.S. National Fungus Collections (BPI) are the repository for over one million fungal specimens worldwide and are the largest such collections in the world. Information associated with these specimens constitute an enormous data resource, especially about plant-associated fungi. Data from the labels of more than 750,000 of the specimens have been entered into a database. These labels have information on the host on which the fungus was found and the locality in which the specimen was collected. Sixty percent of these specimens are from the United States and thus represent a large body of information about the fungi in this country. Data entry has been completed for the Uredinales (rusts), the Ustilaginales (smuts), the Polyporales (polypores), the Deuteromycetes (imperfect fungi), the Ascomycetes, and the C.G. Lloyd collections. Recent progress has been made in the computerization of specimens of the agarics and the "lower" fungi including the Oomycetes and Chytridiomycetes.
