Who We Are

The West Michigan Clean Air Coalition is a partnership of businesses, academic institutions, government agencies, industry, and non-profit organizations in Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, and Kalamazoo counties working together to achieve cleaner air in the region through the education and promotion of voluntary emission reduction activities.

EPA Announces New Ozone Standard On October 1, 2015, EPA strengthened the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ground-level ozone to 70 parts per billion (ppb), based on extensive scientific evidence about ozone’s effects on public health and welfare. The updated standards will improve public health protection, particularly for at-risk groups including children, older adults, people of all ages who have lung diseases such as asthma, and people who are active outdoors, especially outdoor workers. New Program Name

The West Michigan Clean Air Coalition is thrilled to announce that its Ozone Action program has become the Clean Air Action program. The program will now announce Action Days when ground level ozone, fine particulate matter, or both, are expected to reach or exceed the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" threshold on the air quality index. Since it is possible to have unhealthy levels of fine particulate matter throughout the year, the Clean Air Action program is now year-round.

Please remember to sign up for notification of Clean Air Action Days, and help protect your health and the health of your community by taking voluntary actions to keep our air clean.

Consider carpooling, taking public transportation, walking, or biking every day but especially on Action Days. Using an alternative to driving just one day a week for a year can save the typical commuter about 1,200 miles on their vehicle and about $600 in driving costs according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
