Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today dedicated the Bureau of Land Management’s newest national conservation area, the 210,000-acre Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area spanning three counties in western Colorado. The Dominguez-Escalante NCA is the newest addition to BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System. The NLCS highlights some of the West’s most spectacular public lands. In 2000, the NLCS was created to conserve, protect and restore nationally significant landscapes recognized for their cultural, ecological and scientific values. more

Secretary Salazar and Mexican Minister of Environment Strengthen Conservation Cooperation in Big Bend Area of U.S. Mexico Border
In conjunction with the North American Leaders Summit held in Guadalajara, Mexico, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Mexican Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Juan Elvira announced today their commitment to strengthen conservation along the U.S. - Mexico border. The Secretary and the Minister will develop a plan to enhance coordination in the Big Bend and El Carmen area of the border and report to Presidents Barack Obama of the United States and Felipe Calderón of Mexico in six months. The proposed plan will take advantage of national parks and protected areas already designated in the Big Bend and El Carmen region, without prejudice to each country’s existing legislation, border security, and rights. more

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Congressman David Obey today highlighted more than $116,000 in projects at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore funded under President Obama’s economic recovery package that will bring jobs and economic growth to Wisconsin. Overall, the Department of the Interior is investing more than $29 million across Wisconsin in projects in wildlife refuges, national park units, scientific research facilities, and on tribal lands. more
