David E. Gilsinn

David E. Gilsinn is a mathematician with the Mathematical and Computational Sciences Division (MCSD) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. He received the BS degree in Mathematics at Georgetown University in 1964, the MS degree in Mathematics at Rutgers - The State University in 1966, and the PhD degree in Mathematics at Georgetown University in 1969. After spending a year in private industry he joined NBS (NIST) in 1970. From then until 1974 he worked on urban planning and facility location problems. From 1974 to 1978 he was the NBS (NIST) representative on the ANSI BASIC committee and built the prototype BASIC compiler validation programs. From 1978 to 2000 he was with the Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory (MEL) and developed algorithms for optical scattering problems as well as performed finite element analysis for the design of major structural components of a high precision coordinate measuring machines. He also developed statistical and analytical methods to analyze machine tool errors. Awards: The NIST Applied Research Award, 1994 (Group Award). Department of Commerce Bronze Medal, 1994 (Group Award). He joined MCSD in 2000 and has worked with the Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL) in developing algorithms for object recognition at construction sites. His main areas of research span the fields of dynamical systems, optimization, and image processing. He is the author or co-author of more than 50 technical articles and reports and is a member of Sigma Xi, SIAM, ASME.
