Super Kukla ReatorH Canyon Finishes Processing Old Reactor Components
Super Kukla Reactor Operated at Nevada Test Site From 1964-1978

In another example of site facilities working together to stabilize and dispose of surplus nuclear materials from around the DOE Complex, the last components from a Nevada Test Site reactor were  recently processed in H Canyon.

The reactor, called the Super Kukla Prompt Burst Reactor, operated from 1964-1978.  It was used to irradiate test specimens, including material used in weapons.  Its construction included rods, disks, and rings made of uranium, which were manufactured at Oak Ridge Y-12 in the 1960s.  When the reactor completed its operations, its HEU components were returned to Y-12 and were later cut into smaller pieces for offsite shipment.
