harkin announces more than $86,000 to fight drug use in youth correctional facilities

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the Iowa Governors Office of Drug Control Policy received $86,182 to support substance abuse treatment programs at the State Training School and Iowa Juvenile Home. The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) program provided these funds. Harkin is a senior member of the Appropriations Committee.

“After drug use prevention, the most important step we can take in the war on drugs is to provide support for youth who are recovering from an addiction,” said Harkin.  “I am glad that these funds have been allocated, and am confident that they will be beneficial to our youth.”

Specifically, these funds will allow the State Training School and Iowa Juvenile Home to offer gender-specific substance abuse treatment programs for 50 residents.  After leaving the program, participants are provided with aftercare plans coordinated with the appropriate law enforcement officials and/ or legal guardians.

Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) program assists states and local governments in developing and implementing substance abuse treatment programs in state and local correctional and detention facilities. The RSAT program also helps governments create and maintain community-based aftercare services for offenders after their release.
