(Washington, DC) - The Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) Program, or “Cash for Clunkers” should soon be receiving a financial boost. The Senate passed a bill yesterday to provide the program with an additional $2 billion because of its quick success. The House passed its version of the legislation on July 31, 2009, by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 316-109. Congressman Baron Hill supported the initial proposal and the additional funds. In response to the Senate’s action, Hill issued the following statement:
“The goal of the cash for clunkers program is two-fold: to boost the economy by increasing auto sales, and to put safer, more fuel-efficient cars on the road. These goals have been met, and much quicker than we originally thought. Therefore, I am pleased it will be receiving additional funds.
I have heard from both auto dealers and constituents throughout Southern Indiana who have found the program quite successful and beneficial. So, I am pleased these additional funds will allow the program to continue for some time.”
