In the Spotlight
NEON: Helping to Light the Way for Understanding Ecological Change - Scientists in FORT's Invasive Species Science Program, directed by Tom Stohlgren, have been engaged in ongoing research into the ecology of invasive species and vulnerable habitats to support prevention, early detection, assessment, containment, and, where possible, eradication of new invaders. Included in this work are investigations into the physical properties, composition, and hydrology of geologic substrates to identify lands vulnerable to invasion by exotic plants. Read the full story >> Above photo: The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) will not only provide data streams scaled from individual data points to the national landscape, but will also serve as an early warning system for the impacts of climate change, invasive species, and emerging diseases. Partnership in Action
Ecological Forecasting: A NASA/USGS Partnership to Predict and Manage Biological Invasions - In a joint effort to combat invasive species in the U.S., the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Fort Collins Science Center (FORT), NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and Colorado State University (CSU) are combining resources and expertise in developing a National Invasive Species Forecasting System for the management and control of invasive species on all U.S. Department of the Interior and adjacent lands and waters. Additional ResourcesThe Invasive Species Information Node (ISIN) is a data management portal for invasive plants, animals, and pathogens in the United States and a thematic node of the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII). It coordinates invasive species information from other NBII nodes, several USGS Science Centers, and other government and non-government partners. |
