Deputy commander returns to his roots
Lt. Col. Eugene Snyman Lt. Col. Eugene Snyman is Tulsa District’s new deputy district commander; he joined the district on Aug. 17, 2009. He was born in Pretoria, South Africa. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1990 through the University of Kansas Reserve Officer Training Corps with a Bachelor of General Studies degree in English. Canton raises grave markers to mark National Public Lands Day
National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2008, 120,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants, and planted more than 1.6 million trees. Twin Lakes Water Festival impacts next generation

Photo byDara Lowry Council Grove Lake hosted the fifth annual Twin Lakes Water Festival Sept. 17th for fourth and fifth graders from six different counties, 30 schools and 58 classes. The educational event focused on learning about natural resources through a multi-sensory, hands-on approach with an emphasis on water quality and conservation.

Volunteers work to preserve fisheries
It's hard to imagine that gathering brush and rocks, placing them in crates and submerging them in water would be a great Saturday outing, but that's just what 55 volunteers did to help the fisheries habitat at Oologah Lake.

The popular event is called Brush Pile Day and it was started more than 20 years ago by Paul Shockley a conservation specialist for the Northern Area of the Tulsa District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

District employee wins national honor
Charles Schrodt with Chief of Engineers Gen. Robert Van Antwerp, right, and Corps Command Sgt. Maj. Micheal Buxbaum after Schrodt was named the 2009 Natural Resources Management Environmental Compliance Employee of the Year. Outstanding leadership and implementation of new environmental management practices helped a Tulsa District environmentalist win a top award. Charles Schrodt, who works out of the Lake Eufaula Office, was named the winner of the Chief of Engineers 2009 Natural Resources Management Environmental Compliance Employee of the Year Award.

Oklahoma land conveyance NEPA process begins
The Water Resources Development Act of 1999 directed the Secretary of the Army to convey to the State of Oklahoma, at fair market value, all right, title, and interest of the United States in and to approximately 1,580 acres of land located in Marshall County, Okla., and leased to the State of Oklahoma for public park and recreation purposes.
