Cover: Simulated crystal growth on the fcc(001) face of a crystal-substrate binary alloy. Two types of atoms are deposited (indicated by blue and orange spheres) and may move around on the surface. The substrate has a perfect CuPt crystal structure; ideally the grown layers would continue this regular pattern. Note, however, that several substitutional errors have occurred, leading to imperfections in the crystal structure. (Simulation and graphic by James Blue (blue@cam.nist.gov.)
