Public Involvement: Community Policing in Chicago

September 2000
An important feature of many community policing initiatives is that they provide new avenues for citizen involvement in partnerships with police. This NIJ Research Report presents key features of citizen involvement (including awareness and participation) in Chicago's community policing initiative, known as the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS), and examines the extent to which CAPS is meeting police department goals for forming partnerships with the public. The city's successes and shortcomings may illuminate some of the difficulties other departments will likely face as they adopt a community policing model.
