Professional Training

SERC IS DEDICATED TO FOSTERING THE DEVELOPMENT of
the next generation of environmental scientists through an active
fellowship and internship program with an international scope.

Fellows, interns and graduate students from around the world are important members of SERC's research team. They make substantial contributions to the Center's research effort while continuing their educations. Postdoctoral fellowships often foster long-term collaborations between SERC and research centers around the world. SERC scientists also teach courses in environmental science for college and graduate students, teachers, resource managers, and other professionals.

Fellowships
The Smithsonian Institution offers fellowships for advanced study at SERC at the senior postdoctoral, postdoctoral, predoctoral, and graduate student levels. SERC hosts about 18 fellows annually.

Internships
The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in environmental research and education. This program enables students to conduct research under the direction of SERC's professional staff and is tailored to provide the maximum educational benefit to each participant. SERC hosts an average of 60 interns every year.
