New European guidance for influenza surveillance in humans

WHO/Europe’s new guidance includes practical suggestions for hospital and outpatient-based site surveillance and complements the interim guidance already issued. WHO/Europe will hold its annual influenza surveillance meeting on 9–11 September 2009, in St Petersburg, Russian Federation.

Over 42 000 cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in Europe; Belarus reports first case

Over 42 000 laboratory-confirmed cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection have been reported so far by 47 of the 53 countries in the WHO European Region. Belarus reported its first laboratory-confirmed case on 20 August 2009. To date, there have been 90 deaths in 9 countries in the Region.

WHO/Europe shares experience in promoting physical activity

Experts at the Weight of the Nation Conference, held in Washington DC, United States of America in late July, learned of WHO/Europe's work to counteract obesity through physical activity. The focus is on intersectoral approaches to encourage physical activity, and the quantifiable health gains and economic savings of walking and cycling as a means of transport.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in Tajikistan

13 August 2009

On 7 August 2009, the Ministry of Health of Tajikistan informed the WHO Country Office, Tajikistan of five cases of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in Tursunzoda district, 50 km west of the capital Dushanbe. Three of these cases were fatal. WHO/Europe has sent three experts in infectious diseases and infection control to the country to assess the situation and to train health workers in case detection, case management and infection control.

Four key databases now offer latest statistics

The European Health for All database, as well as the databases on European mortality, detailed mortality and hospital morbidity, have all just been updated. They provide fast and easy access in graphical form to a wide range of basic health statistics on the 53 countries in the WHO European Region.

Over 33 000 cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection in Europe

11 August 2009

As of 10 August 2009, 46 of the 53 Member States in the WHO European Region had reported over 33 000 laboratory-confirmed cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection, including 55 deaths in 7 countries: Belgium, France, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Spain and the United Kingdom. WHO/Europe is organizing a series of hospital emergency preparedness workshops this autumn, with focus on the pandemic. Further information on the safety of pandemic vaccines and how they are manufactured has also been published.
