Description: People must carry a boater education card when operating boats greater than 10 hp, and youth 12-15 must carry the card when operating any size powerboat.

Duration: Lifetime card - no renewal required.
Fees - application, exam, etc.:  Card application fee is $10. Courses and exams vary from free to $25 or more.

Examination Information: Classroom courses, equivalency exams and internet options are available. Please check Boater Education Course Options & Descriptions.
Prerequisites: If you took an approved homestudy course prior to 2001 or have completed a Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadron or another approved course, or one of the approved Internet courses, you will need to fill out an official application form and send it to the Marine Board along with $10 and a copy of one of the following:

  • A certificate of completion issued to you by an approved boating safety course provider. It can be a certificate from the Marine Board homestudy course (completed before December 31, 2000), an approved classroom course or approved Internet course; or
  • A certificate, card or other official document issued to you by a proctor stating that you passed the equivalency exam with a score of 70% or better; or
  • A certificate, card or other official document issued by another state or Canada that is equivalent to Oregon's boater education card.
  • A Coast Guard motorboat operator license, either valid or expired.

Required Documentation: You must include a photocopy of your diploma or completion document (originals will not be returned) and a check for $10. The Marine Board will process your application and send you your card in 2 - 3 weeks.For best results, print application at 100 percent (your default setting) in color on clean, white paper. Use a medium-point pen to fill in the information. Incomplete applications will be returned. See instructions for more information.
