Trucking companies need a Class 1A Permit to operate as a for-hire carrier hauling property, other than household goods, from point to point within Oregon. They complete an Application for Class 1A Permit when establishing an account in Oregon or when an existing account has changed entities and/or ownership structure.
$300 for an initial Class 1A Permit $300 for a new Class 1A Permit - necessary when a company changes its ownership structure $50 for a revised Class 1A permit - necessary when a company changes the electables on its permit, such as the election to transport commodities that require cargo insurance or the election to provide a collect on delivery (C.O.D.) service.
No charge to reissue Class 1A permit for simple changes, such as new company name or address.
Continuing Ed Requirements:
Many companies receiving this permit are subject to a Motor Carrier Education Program requirement. Oregon-based companies receiving a certificate or permit for the first time are given a packet of information about motor carrier regulations, including those related to safety, highway-use tax, insurance, and vehicle size and weight. Oregon law requires that new companies participate in this "Motor Carrier Education Program" shortly after receiving a certificate or permit. Prerequisites:
The 1A Permit application is completed by a motor carrier who is establishing an account in Oregon, or a carrier with an existing account who has changed entities and/or ownership structure. Companies must first complete the Application for Motor Carrier Permit.
Companies operating as an individual or partnership using an assumed business name, or as a corporation, must register the business name or corporation with the Oregon Secretary of State, Corporation Division. All corporations and individuals or partnerships using assumed business names should contact that agency, Public Service Bldg., 255 Capitol St. NE, Suite 151, Salem, OR 97310-0210, (503) 986-2200, and get information on how to qualify andregister. There is a fee for this registration/qualification. ODOT will confirm registration directly with the Corporation Division; registration papers from the Corporation Division do not need to be filed with this application.
Also, liability insurance must be filed with ODOT if the carrier is operating vehicles over 26,000 lbs. declared weight, and cargo insurance is required if the carrier transports commodities subject to material damage through normal transportation hazards.
