Description: |
No person younger than 18 years of age shall hunt wildlife, except on their own land or land owned by their parent or legal guardian, unless they have in their possession a hunter education certificate. The Hunter Education Certificate course teaches the safe handling of lawful hunting weapons.
Program The Oregon Hunter Education course must be a minimum of 12 hours. Most courses generally last 20 hours. The subjects taught include:- Hunter ethics and respect for private landowners
- Wildlife management and identification
- Firearms handling and safety
- Hunt preparation and techniques
- Survival and an introduction to bowhunting
Oregon Hunter Education Certificates are issued to students who successfully complete the course. Through a reciprocity agreement, certificates are recognized by all 50 states and the following countries and continents: Canada, Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, and South Africa. |

Examination Information: |
All students are required to participate in a live fire exercise. Furthermore, at the end of the hunter education course, students are evaluated in three areas:- A written test consisting of 60 multiple choice and true/false questions (passing grade 80 percent or better)
- A practical test of safe firearms handling
- An evaluation of the students attitude and sense of responsibility as demonstrated throughout the class

Continuing Ed Requirements: |
Independent Study Students whose personal schedule or remote location makes it difficult for them to attend a regular class can satisfy the classroom requirement by completing a written Independent Study course. Independent Study is also suitable for students with learning disabilities who have an experienced adult to assist them with the study material. |
Prerequisites: |
There is no minimum age to attend a course, but children under age 11 often have a difficult time with the material and homework load. Some may also lack the upperbody strength to handle a firearm safely and control the muzzle when performing loading and unloading drills. |
Duplicate: |
Duplicate certificates of course completion shall be issued only through the Salem headquarters office of the Department. A permanent duplicate will be issued only when the student's registration card is on file. A temporary duplicate (valid only through the end of that year) will be issued when a student's records are not on file, if the student provides an affidavit, signed by the student and a parent or guardian if the student is a minor, stating that the student has successfully completed the required course. Such students may obtain a permanent duplicate only by successfully repeating the required course. Here is the link to the Hunter Education Dupicate Card Request Form. |
