Description: If you wish to perform any type of structural work to your residential or commercial property, you will be required to fill out this application and pay appropriate fees prior to work commencing.

Jurisdiction - Usually the administration of the building code, and permit and inspection services are accomplished by the local cities and counties. In some counties, it is accomplished by the State Building Codes Division. You can determine which jurisdiction administers the building code, and permit and inspection services for the area you are interested in at the Jurisdiction Information webpage.

Duration: 180 days
Fees - application, exam, etc.:  Depends on the type of work you will be doing and the jurisdiction you are building in. A 1,200 sq ft home averages a fee of $1,200.

Prerequisites: You have to be the property owner doing the work on your primary residence, or a property owner hiring a licensed contractor or be a licensed contractor who is licensed with Building Codes and registered with CCB.

Required Documentation:
  • Local zoning and DEQ approvals must be provided.
  • Licensed constractors will need to provide proof of license.
  • 2 - 4 sets of complete drawings, depending on the project.
Additional Information: You may need an electrical or plumbing permit. If you do the work without a Structural Permit, you can be fined up to $1,000 a day.
